Week 198

James Earl Jones at The Longacre Theatre in New York City.

Week 198

James Earl Jones in New York City. I particularly enjoy photographing older people. I want to soak in as much knowledge as possible. I was excited, and nervous. It was odd to hear the iconic voice of Darth Vader telling grandpa jokes. He had a great story about getting a private training session from Arnold Schwarzenegger during the filming of Conan the Barbarian. James was so sweet, funny, and it was an honor to photograph him. – JD

Week 197

Dan Stevens in New York.

Week 197

Dan Stevens in New York City. I photographed Dan in anticipation of his flick The Guest. I went out and saw it the weekend after shooting Dan and the experience was amazing. Dan is a quintessentially polite and handsome British dad with two kids. His character in The Guest is an American military badass who says things like, “cash is easy to come by.” It was an awesome juxtaposition. Dan also starred in Downton Abbey. He was engaging, fun, and a pleasure to photograph. – JD

Week 196

Shep Gordon at the Plaza Hotel.

Week 196

Shep Gordon in New York City at a private residence in the Plaza Hotel. About a week after I photographed Mike Myers I got a call to take some portraits of the subject of Mike’s new film: Shep Gordon. Fresh off the shoot with Mike, Shep and I had a lot to talk about. Mike Myers took the time to make a movie about him, and the reasons were obvious. If you’re interested in the music business, the entertainment industry, Shep has navigated those paths uniquely. He embodies the traits necessary to be a great entertainment manager: decisiveness, flattery and wit. I really enjoyed my time with him. After the shoot I sent Mike a print of Shep and got back the note below. – JD

Week 195

Mike Myers in New York for the New York Times.

Week 195

Mike Myers in his Manhattan office shot in anticipation of his directorial debut of Supermensch. Futbol, Sondheim, guitars, Shep Gordon: these were a few of the things we spoke about during our shoot. Mike’s work influenced me far before I even thought of becoming a photographer. He was just as I expected: hilarious, goofy, insightful, opinionated, and basking in the glow of being a new father. This was a particularly special one, for me, and my sincere gratitude to Lindsay B. for her support. By the end, Mike had control of the Bose and we were cruising through some deep cuts of Elis Regina. – JD

Week 194

Ed Sheeran in New York City

Week 194

Ed Sheeran in Manhattan. Ed’s new album “X” (read as Multiply) is out this week. We were able to take some portraits pre sound check on stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom. I’ve been going to shows at Hammerstein for over 15 years so this was a special opportunity to be on the stage I’ve seen many amazing acts. Taylor Swift (below) stopped by mid shoot to watch as Ed and I did our thing. It was a pleasure to take pics of a nice guy fellow red head. – JD

Week 193

John Oliver in New York City.

Week 193

John Oliver in Manhattan shot before the premier of his new HBO series Last Week Tonight. John was fresh on my mind after seeing his stand up show only a month before I got this assignment. I was already a big fan via The Daily Show and loved his run as host. He was just as I’d hoped: gracious, hilarious, and up for anything in the limited amount of time we had. Thanks John & HBO! – JD

Week 190

Sharon Jones in Queens.

Week 190

Sharon Jones in New York, shot for the cover of The Village Voice. This was my first shoot and first cover for The Voice. I grew up on this paper. I was constantly checking it as a kid for new live shows and to see what was happening in New York. Sharon was beautiful, upbeat, and inspiring. We grabbed her for a few moments on the set of her new music video: Stranger To My Happiness. – JD
