Week 216

Two, The Book

Week 216

My first book of portraits, Two. A little over two years ago I got a chance to take my first celebrity portrait and that is when I began a career of taking pictures. Over 200 shoots later I’ve made my first book: 62 black and white celebrity portraits duotone printed on beautiful 11×11″ paper and hardcover bound. Tom Hanks is on the cover, Patti Smith graces the back cover and there are about 60 more very interesting people in between (like Sharon Jones, John Oliver, Cuba Gooding Jr., Michelle Dockery below.) Here you can see me approving the first pages to come off the press in Verona Italy, at EBS, where Two was printed. EBS has printed works from Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and many more. It was an honor to work with them. I’m really so proud of this work, and humbled with the opportunities that allowed me to make it. Two is now printed, bound and about to ship to the US of A. It will be here in July and you can find more info about it and the ability to purchase it here.

Week 215

buildOn in Nepal.

Week 215

Images from my trip to Nepal, 2015. Last year the stellar non-profit movement, buildOn, tasked me with traveling to Nepal to capture the buildOn Trek experience. The goal of Trek is to build a school where no school existed. These are portraits of the people affected by that amazing change. Read some stories about the individual images on instagram.

buildOn is bringing me back this year, right now, to do it all again after the entire country has been rebuilding physically and emotionally from the massive earthquake of 2015. I will be traveling with 20 high school students from the Bronx and Detroit. Many of these kids have never been on an airplane, let alone, across the world. As a group we will stay, sleep, eat, and live in the village where they will build the school. They will work alongside our hosts to build the school. One of the most significant observations from the trip last year was the massive transformative experience this was for these teenagers.

This time I’ve partnered with the amazing people at Hasselblad and Fotocare to make it all happen. I couldn’t be more excited to get out there and make more images for buildOn.

Week 214

Dave Grohl in New York City.

Week 214

Dave Grohl in New York City. Dave was in town to play the David Letterman Late Show’s finale with the Foo Fighters: a must see montage. Dave delivered on his reputation for being one of the nicest guys in Rock ‘n Roll. We had an amazingly wide ranging chat talking about everything from his daughter’s new obsession with ponies through our mutual respect for the metal kings, Slayer. – JD

Week 213

Mika Brzezinski in New York City

Week 213

Morning Joe‘s Mika Brzezinski in New York City. There is a fun moment when you realize 30 Rockefeller Plaza is not solely a tourism landmark, but is a place where Mika and Joe join Jimmy Fallon, Lorne Michaels and many many more to come to work. It’s the same place we wandered to find a spot to photograph Mika. She was extremely smart, sharp and on point. Her book Knowing Your Value is a must read. We spoke a lot about that book and baseball. Joe hung around the shoot for a little art direction, too. – JD

Week 209

Candice Bergen in New York City

Week 209

Candice Bergen, in her home, in New York City. Her space is a gorgeous duplex apartment, with a floor to ceiling window overlooking Central Park, that was first used as an artist loft at the turn of the 20th century. It is a fitting environment for Candice. She’s a wonderful photographer and we use the same lab, Chelsea Photographic, to process our film. Her space is littered with art and photography books. She is witty, funny, and extremely entertaining. Towards the end of our shoot she asked to put on a pair of prop reindeer antlers that she used at a recent costume party: you can’t say no to that. – JD

Week 208

Shayne Oliver / Hood by Air in New York City

Week 208

Shayne Oliver, creator of Hood by Air, in New York City. Shayne has had a meteoric rise from dropping out of FIT to commanding a brand that boasts fans like Kayne West, Rhianna & Kendrick Lamar. Shayne was quiet and reserved when I came by his downtown headquarters to take his portrait. HBA is nothing short of unique. I enjoyed photographing him ensconced in racks of his work. – JD
